General Discussion / Re: Finding People.
« on: 31 October, 2021, 01:01:16 AM »
Gordon Firth's name rings a bell, Pam - but that could be from seeing his post on 208 Then & Now the other day. We mostly used to hang around with those we met daily in the compound or billetts, so I remember very few other than radio operators and some drivers and EDs. I just looked at the squadron photo from 1964 and recognise nearly everyone, but wouldn't have shared beers with many other than the dozen or so close mates in "our" group.

Just read these comments again and can't help wondering if the 51 million quid that Britain gave France to stop the boats was at least viewed by them as (very minor) part compensation for the $90 billion that Oz screwed them for with the submarine contract? (oops)  ::)

G'day Lee - I logged in earlier and opened this "Logging in comments" thread but the very first post came up, instead of the most recent.  I couldn't remember how to change "last to first" and vice versa so logged out and emailed you.
UPDATE: Thanks for your email response, Lee - and for the benefit of anyone else in the same situation, here's how to change the order of posts up/down > down/up and vice versa:
Mouse-over 'Profile', Click 'Forum Profile'
Mouse-over 'Modify Profile'
Click 'Look & Layout'
2/3 down list 'Set' (tick) or 'Reset' (Not) as required
Click 'Change Profile' (bottom left)

General Discussion / 208 Then & Now
« on: 29 October, 2021, 02:16:53 PM »
Just had a quick look at "208 Then & Now" to see how much of my listing needs updating (not much - just our legal guardianship of niece Sunny, otherwise we're still backwards and forwards between Oz and VN, Covid border lockdowns permitting). I just went in for a quick look but ended up spending more than a very interesting half hour reading a lot of the others that I've forgotten over the years.  Highly recommended if you can spare the time - it really brings all the memories flooding back...  8)

Thanks.  The main bit that caught my attention was "https" at the beginning, whereas we've always used "http". I just opened my link in 'favourites' to check and sure enough, it now says "https" despite my never touching it! So the warning in Pam's Welcome letter was probably unnecessary, although I suppose it never hurts to be super-careful when internet security is concerned!
Can't remember where I saw it but probably up in my browser while I was reading the MB because there's a longer one there now: https://www.marsden.me.uk/SMF/index.php?action=post;topic=11.0;last_msg=122

Lee, I just noticed this updated URL - https://www.marsden.me.uk/SMF/ - is it the one we should all use from now on?

General Discussion / Kop that, Fergie!
« on: 25 October, 2021, 03:01:04 AM »
Man Utd 0 Liverpool 5 - at Old Trafford, in front of Mr "Big Mouth" Ferguson himself (he who started the entire decades-long feuding with his smartarse comments on arrival at Old Trafford that he was there "to knock Liverpool off their perch")! Now he knows, if he didn't already, that it takes more than one swallow to make a summer! I've gone right off football since the big money replaced local pride and fervour - but last night's result has thoroughly made my day! Now can't wait for the inevitable social media memes of Fergie's face when the fifth goal went in - yeehaaa!!!  ;D ;D ;D

I also use Edge and love it - very easy to use and change. You can reset your font defaults, Pam - several types and sizes for you to choose from. But I just noticed three little boxes on this view - Font Face, Font Size and Change Color - so that should help without even going near Edge... (maybe)!

General Discussion / Re: Vaccines
« on: 25 October, 2021, 02:48:21 AM »
In Australia's case it was bad gov't decisions that stalled the vax rollout (put all their eggs into the one AZ basket and then the bad press coverage started about blood clotting so widespread "vax hesitancy" ensued because they didn't have enough Pfizer to fill the gaps). Then you've got places like Vietnam that simply don't have the money to buy more than a relative "handful" of vaccines so rely on donations from the more affluent countries - which, like rich people the world over, covet what they've got for themselves and only give away what they don't want (mostly AZ)! But despite the challenges, the VNs have now vaxxed nearly 75 million (total pop ~96 million, including tens of millions of children and mountain dwellers). Thanks to timely intervention by the Australian Chamber of Commerce, we foreigners finally got our first jabs (AZ) last week, so feeling much happier now - especially as the "AZ stigma" is gradually disappearing as more and more success stories replace the blood clotting nightmares. Whoever said the most powerful entity in the world is the media was dead right - they can make or break anyone and anything at the stroke of a pen (or key)!

Please ignore previous - I just opened up the thread and saw Pam's and my five little green squares and Lee's five red ones. Also our rankings as moderators and admin. But I'm still trying to find the "reply panel" to continue Lee's instructions about opening up the posts.  I'll keep looking and resort to email if all else fails!  Btw, I like the ability to edit on the run - this is my third attempt at posting this one!
Last question for now - how/when do we graduate from being Newbies? ;D

General Discussion / Re: Avatars on this MB

My new 'Hash House Harriers' avatar looks good - thanks Lee! We're all waiting now for our lockdowns to be eased sufficiently to let residents go outside and exercise so we can get back to "Hashing" around the local mountains again - it must be getting closer because our infection numbers are plummeting thanks to 'prisoner-like' lockdowns for the past 3 months.
And now I can see that when we use the emojis we initially get a text indication but once the post has been actioned it auto turns into the relevant emoji so all good! I'm doing a 'big smile' emoji now, which I see as 'semi-colon D' but you'll see as a big smile - magic, huh!  ;D

Oops, just trying out the new avatar (Vung Tau is the town/city/island state where we live in Vietnam at least until Scotty from Marketing lets us back into Australia!). I'll post this and look for the other thread about avatars. Feel free to ignore!

I never proactively use 'Scouse' these days, either, Pam - except when communicating with ex-Army people who wouldn't know me by any other name. I never in living memory used "Martin" during my 12 years of service - so it's all about recognition and putting a face to a name, that's all.  8)

Gotta say that living life upside down/back to front works great during lockdowns - and arguably even better than listening to canned music because ours is all "live": 24/7! A lot of you guys got married and produced offspring relatively early so you've done the "raising a child" thing and will hopefully know what I'm talking about - but I was always too busy running around the world and jumping out of "perfectly good" aeroplanes so have only recently got into raising a child but have to say it was worth the wait. We were the only family members available to care 24/7 for our niece Minh Anh (aka "Sunny") when her dad (Linh's brother) died unexpectedly of Sepsis a few years ago. She (Sunny) has lived with us ever since in the beachside town of Vung Tau - 2 hours due east of Saigon (HCMC). We've been locked inside our apartment for the past 3 months solid - only allowed outside when they deliver the daily food order, and only for long enough to pick it up and bring it inside.  But if I could have picked my ideal companions to share lockdown it would be the two I've got: wife Linh and niece Sunny (we're now her legal guardians with mum's consent, although it's only valid in VN until we can get back to Oz when the borders re-open and start the same process down there). Happy days indeed!
