General Discussion / Re: Message Posting by 208 People
« on: 19 August, 2023, 04:52:21 AM »
"Time and tides wait for no man (or woman!)". There are not many posts on this MB apart from those made by the same few, so we can only assume that former posters/colleagues have moved on with their lives and have higher priorities than swapping comments about the past. Or maybe they just can't remember anymore, like me! :-X

General Discussion / Add a fb link to the MB and/or GB - yes/no?
« on: 29 July, 2023, 02:48:49 PM »
G'day all
I've been flat-chat since getting back to VN from our recent trip downunder, so haven't really made any progress with researching the possibility of replacing and/or linking Message Board/Guest Book to a new facebook group. However, one thing that seems fairly obvious is that it's not entirely straightforward. On top of that is the difficulty of discontinuing either or both. Here's a copy of the advice I just read elsewhere:
How do I delete a Facebook group that I admin?
If you're a group admin, you can delete your Facebook group by removing all members (in private groups) or banning all members (in public groups) and then leaving the group, as long as the group creator has left the group or you are the group creator. When no members remain in the group, it will automatically be deleted.
Deleting a group is permanent and cannot be reversed. Alternatively, you can pause a group. Learn about the differences between pausing and deleting. .../ends
Given the apparent lack of interest since Lee valiantly rebuilt Pam's 208 Sigs site despite many obstacles that would have floored lesser people, I can only wonder if it would be worthwhile starting a facebook group that might never take off and therefore cause the originator some almighty headaches trying to get rid of it again!
Any comments/offers of help?

Not my business Pam (and see separate post mentioning avatars in the "Welcome back..." thread), but your "defiant" avatar looks pretty good to me - and definitely looks like the photos I've seen of you!

Hi Pam. I notice your separate conversation with Lee about avatars so won't interrupt ("too many cooks..."). And mostly tied up with last-minute "goodbyes" and shopping for gifts now anyway (Linh and Sunny nearly gave me a heart-attack yesterday when they happily told me they'd spent $500 on gifts for family - gifting is a major VN cultural thing so I can't complain, even though my own expenditure yesterday was a tiny $4.40 for coffee!).
Our good news is that the migration lawyer we met on Thursday is confident she can get Sunny downunder on a student visa and then switch to a family sponsored child visa that will give her permanent residency (because her step-mum is already in Australia, having divorced her dad a few years before he died). And I bought a new tablet to replace the aging Samsung Tab 3 I've been using for the past half dozen or so years because now even the replacement battery won't hold a charge so it's time to move on... And of course we met Lee down in Adelaide, so all in all it's been a very successful/worthwhile and enjoyable visit downunder for all of us, despite the freezing cold weather (but back to VN and mid-30 temps in a coupla days - yeehaaaa!!!). ;D

Lucky you, Terry! We're downunder for one more week of (relatively) freezing midwinter weather (16-20C) before heading back to a nice, comfortable 36C in VN!
Big appointment tomorrow with migration lawyers to see if we can get (our 10yo niece) Sunny down here a bit more permanently - at least until she's ready for uni or the workforce so her poor old mum can have a break from chopping dead pigs all night in the markets!
Got together with Lee down in Adelaide last week and we (and Pam) agreed that I'll have a go at creating a facebook page or group that Lee can link to this website - because hardly any of the former regulars have found their way back to this MB and one reason that's been quoted to me is that the registration process is rather confusing to some of our older colleagues - and although I'm very much a former facebook atheist I had to use it to communicate with the VNs in our hash house harriers group and now realise that registration is ultra-straightforward and it's also very easy to block the idiots who just want to see their name in print - which then leaves the pages open for the more sensible folk amongst us!
I'll see how things go when we get back to VN mid next week (I've already tee'd up an information exchange session with the local IT gurus at our watering hole, so that'll be a good start!). Say Hi to Fran for us!

Just thought I'd share the news that most former MB regulars have already heard by email, ie that thanks to several years of amazing perseverance against often quite intimidating odds, Lynn "Lee" Burgess has rebuilt the 208 (Comwel) Sig Sqn website, now kindly hosted by Steve Mason's son Poul in Denmark (208 was nothing if not global!). Pam's still the site owner, of course, with Lee as Admin and Scouse (MR), Pam and "Outback Traveller" Ken helping out as moderators. So here we are - back to something close to normal once more, with Covid and other obstacles firmly behind us - all ready to continue chatting as though the past 2-3 years simply never happened. I'll drink to that - yeehaaa!  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Lee. Sunny's a real sweetheart and prayed at the pagoda this morning to ask her granddad to help uncle Martin get better after his fall down the mountainside(!) on Sunday's run with the Vung Tau Hash House Harriers. I'm hoping granddad will also use his heavenly influence to stop my nose dripping constantly now the VN rainy season has kicked into top gear - with temperatures down below 30C for the first time this year! I can only shudder when thinking about heading downunder next week in Oz midwinter! We'll hopefully catch up in Adelaide (Hilton, 30/6-4/7) but you might need x-ray vision to recognise us through all the gloves, beanies, scarves and overcoats - brrrrrrr!  ;D ;D ;D

...and here we are a year later - which means Sunny has now lived with us officially for more than 5 years and so qualifies as a dependent child. It's great to know we'll be helping to improve her life because she's certainly improving ours!  ;D

I see the warning in red at the top (interesting in itself - never seen it before), but I'm not so much replying to previous posts on this topic as reinstating it on page 1 - for no other reason than to see if/how it works, ie I'm taking advantage of the "experimental" phase we're currently going through! ;D

General Discussion / Re: "Ten Pound Poms"
« on: 31 May, 2023, 05:09:50 AM »
Sorry to interrupt the avatar comments but my two-bob re "problems with indigenous people" is that I had only been in Australia for a few weeks/months when I went to Tennant Creek in the mines and we spent a lot of down-time under the local trees drinking beer with the local aboriginals and they were always entirely hospitable (could have been because we usually paid for the grog, but still...). However, down in TC (32 km away) it was a different story - one pub for whites and one for blacks. It was the local cops who enforced that rule but whether they caused the problems with it or just exacerbated them I don't know - but there was not a lot of sympathy for them from blacks or whites after a gang of bikies had ridden through town and humiliated the cops on the main street in front of the entire population!

That sounds like the infamous Ocker, Pam - insulting people was his role in life, so don't take it personally! I read an article about the 10 pound poms program and it seemed to focus on the multinational Aussies feeling that the poms were given an unfair advantage over migrants from other nations. The only bit that annoys me in retrospect is that I was so keen to get downunder for the good weather and skydiving that I sold my parachute and hopped on the first boat I could find, the SS Britannis - it cost me 237 quid from memory, and I never knew about the 10 quid program until I actually arrived in Australia. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Just thought I'd make a brief post to reposition this topic at the top of the pinned notices after Pam highjacked top spot asking about avatars!  ;D ;D ;D

Thanks Lee - and have to say it would be nice if it did get lost amongst so many other threads being started because that would indicate a return to normal after all the cc (covid cancellations) of the past few years! Fingers crossed...

General Discussion / Replacing the Guest Book
« on: 15 May, 2023, 02:22:31 PM »
Greetings all!
This post follows the email just sent to all registered former users of Pam's 208 Sigs website Message Board, inviting suggestions, comments, etc to replace the now inoperable Guest Book. All responses will be assessed at end-May to help decide how (or "if") to replace the GB. Please feel free to make any comments etc that you wish - but try to keep them usable and positive (ie, no expensive replacements, nor suggestions for something that could test the technical understanding of the average website visitor).
Cheers
Martin "Scouse" Ratia (on behalf of website owner Pam, admin Lee, and fellow moderators Ken and Pam)

General Discussion / Re: FInding People - Geoff Southby

Welcome Geoff - it's been quite a while "between drinks" but great to see the MB operating again as designed! Bit busy at the moment because we've just received the very welcome news that our 10yo niece Sunny has been granted another Oz tourist visa. They had quoted "about 3 months" for application results but ours came in 3 weeks so now it's "hurry up" to sort a million and one things before heading downunder to try and relax in the freezing cold for a month or so (it's roasting hot in VN at the mo', but much prefer to fry than freeze!) - but I'll hopefully remember to circulate an "all stations" email encouraging former regulars to surface again on this MB. Certa Cito - or as one comic captioned an ex Air Boon Choo photo in The Wire: "Certa SEATO"!  ;D
