re COP26: While consuming the aforementioned beverage (Pam,s new email address thread) the thought occurred to me - if we reduce, or indeed cancel, the use of fossil fuels and thus save the planet and grow more trees, what do we end up with? Answer: more fossil fuels.

I'm glad I wasn't party to, and do not understand, the thinking behind the change of ISP. Further, I do not know why an email address at one.com ( the website host) has not been considered (ie xxxxxx@marsden.me.uk).
It is perfectly feasible to have your broadband supplied by one organisation, and to have your email supplied by another - some might say it is advisable!!

I do believe I shall have a beer 8) ;D 8)

BTW Pam, do you know the reason why Eric Wells and Eric Elson share the same photograph in the 208 Then & Now, which is correct owner?

In the short term (12-18 months - he said hopefully) email any changes you would like to me. I will edit, or create the appropriate pages, content, and links, etc.
When I have developed a workable procedure I shall go into print.

Hey Martin - your last post stirred some memories for me. Particularly that 543 Tp just being set up. Didn't have a long life, did it? I landed at Paya Lebar S'pore on the 6 June 1964. No paperwork just a passport, a copy of the posting order, an army ID card, and a used one way air ticket. I present to the 'Air movements desk', " I'm posted to 543 Signal Troop" say I in my most impressive voice having just spent the better part of two days in a beat up Hastings. "Where's that? Never heard of it" from the man uniform behind the desk. We managed to remain civil for all of 20 minutes, after which he says "into that Land Rover - we'll be in touch". I haven't the faintest idea where I was fed and watered. I do know it wasn't Nee Soon - far too posh for that. On the third morning another uniform shows up "Your going on a train, lad! Get your gear", "Where to?" "A place called Tampin. If you get to KL you've gone too far" All this time, she who must be obeyed, Margot (Meg) to those who know her, was a Com Cen OP at 14 Sigs Gloucester (freshly married and freshly separated - just time enough together to get pregnant), was working in the Tape Relay Centre at Boddington, when across the desk comes a signal from OC 208 Signal Sqn, Malacca, via Singapore, and no doubt other British facilities, on it's way to the WO Whitehall. The OC at the time was not a man of many words - "Where's L/Cpl Burgess?". I'm glad I wasn't the person who had to tell him "He's on a train, Sir" End of conversation except for a few choice words about the incompetents in Singapore Air Movements. I still have, in amongst all the papers, memorabilia and photos, the official program of the visit (mid 65, I think) of Phil, D of E rip. I shall try and find it to post on the site.

General Discussion / Re: Question about the top 3 posts in colour
« on: 03 November, 2021, 07:55:56 AM »
Question - what is a sticky thread? Ans They are termed sticky cos they are stuck at the top of the list (with the pin) - their own sub list as it were.

Question - why are some threads made sticky? Ans To keep frequently used, and/or currently pertinent threads 'in your face' particularly while we are getting used to using the MB

All good?

As mentioned elsewhere, or maybe it was an email, the Forum clock is set to Danish time (UTC +1) for no other reason that that may be the most likely location of the site server. T would stand corrected given more accurate information, or in the face of rabid argument to set it up differently. ;D ;D

The top 3 threads are termed 'Sticky' threads. they will always be shown in date order at the top of the Thread list. All other threads appear below the sticky threads in date order.

Always with the Kiwis (543 Tp) I could, most mornings, be seen scuttling across the main road to the Kiwi lines. I was a great place to hide ;D ;D Although I have to say I did enjoy working in Tech Maint. Freezing A/C beautiful. Darryl Kajewski had them (the air conditioners) stocked with Tiger

I've just finished the update of the Reg Instructions. There are now 6 images and the facility to download the Agreement/Privacy document in PDF and Word formats. Also just done a backup manually. Note to self, Really must find out how to do it through the host organisation - in other words have the backup on Poul's server rather than my confuser.....

Now,
1. Those member quantities are pre-anti SPAM measures (requiring Admin approval) when we were swamped with bot generated users (now all in the bit bucket!!!). I you check the Member list you will notice member sequence numbers > 90.

2. Time zone was setup Danish time, UTC +1, for no other reason than that is where the server is most likely to be.

3. I suspect not, the assumption being that you are going to talk to something reasonably near the Thread title. There will be lessons learnt here I think. Precise topics (Ford cars before 1950) might be a very short thread, whereas (ford cars) could go on forever. Further, I you think you are likely to 'Off topic' preface you remarks appropriately. AS your previous post touched on - don't be afraid of starting a new topic - Also don't be too disappointed if nobody runs with it. ;D ;D

4. The date of birth issue is a 'known problem' at SMF. the official line is 'we do not issue bug fix releases for a single issue unless there are security aspects in the issue'. On the plus side there may be a Mod out there to address the problem, (Mods are non-sanctioned, non-SMF, changes to the software, which may or may not be free) there are hundreds of them out there. I will do a bit of research to see what might be available. By way of example, you might recall we once discussed a Mod called Cleantalk (anti SPAM), which we put on the back burner till we assessed the extent, if any, of any potential SPAM problem.

Negative.

SMF (on the end of your URL) is the folder where all the MB files live.
Now for the geeky bit.
The SMF Message Board is written in php, which requires a server side compiler to run. Our (Pouls) host has such a compiler. The rest of our site runs html. The php compiler takes care of the communication between the host server and everybody's html system (everybody's browser).

That's about as simple as I can make it. Enjoy

BTW where did you notice it? I know where it should be, but have you found another?
